About Travertine Marble
Travertine is one of the world's oldest building stones — the Romans built the Colosseum from it — and Pakistan's Balochistan quarries produce some of the finest beige travertine available today. It forms when calcium carbonate precipitates out of mineral-rich spring water over thousands of years, creating a sedimentary stone with a distinctive pitted surface and beautiful linear banding. The Turbat and Makran regions of Balochistan sit on exactly this geology, yielding travertine in warm ivory, beige, cream, grey, and walnut tones.
What makes travertine special is its natural texture: tiny pits and voids left by escaping carbon dioxide during formation. These can be left open for a rustic, slip-resistant surface, or resin-filled and honed for a smooth contemporary finish. Cut one way you get vein-cut travertine with dramatic linear stripes; cut the other you get cross-cut with a cloudy, mottled pattern. Two completely different stones from the same block.
In Pakistani homes, travertine has surged in popularity for a simple reason: it stays cool underfoot even in peak Punjab summers and its naturally textured surface resists slipping — ideal for families with children and elderly members. Architects specify it for exterior facades, feature walls, bathrooms, and Mediterranean-style flooring. See how it compares in our Travertine vs Botticino table below.
Travertine Marble Specifications
Laboratory-tested physical properties. Architects and contractors: use these values for structural specifications and tender documents.
| Property | Test Method | Value |
|---|---|---|
| Origin | Quarry region | Turbat / Makran belt, Balochistan, Pakistan |
| Stone type | Geological | Sedimentary (calcium carbonate, spring-deposited) |
| Base color | Visual | Beige, cream, ivory; also grey, brown, rust, walnut |
| Surface character | Visual | Natural pitting; vein-cut (linear) or cross-cut (cloudy) |
| Apparent Density | ASTM C97 | 2.30 – 2.50 g/cm³ |
| Compressive Strength | ASTM C170 | 39 – 80 MPa |
| Water Absorption | ASTM C97 | 1.0% – 3.0% (porous — sealing required) |
| Mohs Hardness | Mohs Scale | 3.0 (softer than marble — use honed finish for floors) |
| Finishes available | — | Polished, Honed, Brushed, Tumbled, Natural (unfilled) |
| Standard sizes | — | 12"x12", 12"x24", 24"x24" tiles; gangsaw slabs up to 8ft x 5ft |
| Thickness | — | 10–12 mm tiles; 18–20 mm slabs; 30 mm counters |
Note: Travertine is more porous than marble. A penetrating sealer is mandatory for kitchens, bathrooms, and outdoor use. Honed finish is recommended over polished for flooring slip resistance.
Travertine Marble Grades & Price in Pakistan
Travertine is Pakistan's most grade-sensitive stone — the same variety ranges from PKR 180 to PKR 750 per sq ft depending on grade and finish. Always confirm the grade before comparing prices. Rates below are per square foot, ex-factory Karachi, updated October 2026.
| Grade | Description | PKR / sq ft | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| A+ — Imported Polish | Premium selection, filled and mirror-polished, consistent color | PKR 600 – 750 | Luxury floors, hotel lobbies, export |
| A — Fine Quality | Good color consistency, filled and honed or polished | PKR 300 – 450 | Drawing rooms, feature walls, facades |
| B+ — Standard | Natural variation, open or partially filled pits | PKR 180 – 230 | Budget flooring, outdoor areas, rentals |
Pricing by Application
| Application | PKR / sq ft | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Floor tiles (Fine grade) | PKR 210 – 380 | Filled + honed, most common |
| Stair treads | PKR 320 – 500 | 30mm, bullnose edge |
| Kitchen countertops | PKR 370 – 500 | 30mm, sealed — 3× flooring rate |
| Wall cladding / facade | PKR 250 – 450 | Dry-cladding system extra |
City-Wise Indicative Rates (Fine grade, 24"x24")
| City | PKR / sq ft |
|---|---|
| Karachi (factory gate) | PKR 300 – 420 |
| Lahore | PKR 320 – 450 |
| Islamabad / Rawalpindi | PKR 330 – 470 |
| Peshawar / Multan | PKR 310 – 440 |
Buyer warning: Because travertine varies so widely by grade, a PKR 180 quote and a PKR 750 quote can both be "travertine." Ask for the grade (B+, Fine, or A+), the finish (filled/honed vs natural), and a physical sample before committing.

Best Applications for Travertine Marble
- Exterior facades: The signature use — travertine's warm tones and weather resistance make it Pakistan's favorite facade stone. Dry-cladding recommended. See our wall cladding guide.
- Flooring: Honed, filled travertine is slip-resistant and stays cool — excellent for drawing rooms and corridors in hot climates.
- Bathrooms: Perfect spa-like material; use honed finish for wet-area grip. Seal thoroughly around showers.
- Kitchen: Beautiful but high-maintenance — apply an oleophobic nano-sealer and wipe spills immediately. See our kitchen marble guide.
- Stairs: Tumbled or honed treads give excellent traction; the earthy tones hide dust well.
- Outdoor / pools: Tumbled travertine pavers stay cool under bare feet and drain naturally — a top choice for pool decks and terraces.

"We clad our entire farmhouse facade in honed travertine — three summers of direct sun and it still looks new. The stone stays noticeably cooler than the concrete boundary wall."
